Real American Grappling is a Charlotte academy led by Michael Allen, a third-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt recognized by the IBJJF, who began grappling in 2000 under Johnny Huskey. The gym was formerly Checkmat Charlotte and kept the same programs, coaching and ownership when it rebranded. It teaches gi and no-gi BJJ for adults, a fundamentals class for newcomers, women's classes and age-grouped kids' BJJ. A separate youth wrestling program runs under a dedicated wrestling coach. Open mats give members extra time to roll, and the schedule includes early-morning, lunchtime and evening sessions. A team of black, brown and purple belt instructors shares the teaching.
