EmptyHands Karate School is a traditional Shotokan dojo founded in 2006 and based in a church hall in Ilford. The syllabus is inspired by the late Hirokazu Kanazawa Sōke, with a few adaptations, and runs from 10th Kyu to Shodan in clear beginner, intermediate and advanced programmes. Children from the age of four and adults of any age are welcome, and no experience or karate suit is needed to start. Training ranges from pre-arranged kumite to controlled free sparring. The school is family-run and also offers Tai Chi Chuan, Himalayan Hatha yoga, Shiatsu and one-to-one coaching. It runs an invite-only advanced dojo in Epping for developed students and a black belt programme with more private training with the Sensei.
